Nexhmije Pagarusha

Nexhmije Pagarusha is an ethnic Albanian singer and actress from Kosova. Born in the small village Pagarusha on May 7th, 1933. She attended some years at the school of music in Belgrade in the solo canto section. She begun her music career at the Radio Pristina in 1948.
For almost 40 years did she shared her great talent in music and she is hard to place in one specific genre of music since she sang almost all of them. Her interpretations in folk music were exactly as perfect as well as she was in the classic music, especially in opera.
She was called the "Bilbili i Kosovës" (Nightingale of Kosovo), "Queen of the Albanian music" as well as Madam Butterfly etc, etc. She was loved and adored by the music critics as well as of the music lovers. She gained great popularity in many countries and she led many tours with the music ensembel "Shota". She gained the titel "Këngëtare e shekullit" (Singer of the centurie) in her country.

She performed more than 150 songs and the song "Baresha" (Heardswoman) is one of her most popular songs. The song was composed buy her husband Rexhep Mulliqi and the text was written by Rifat Kukaj.
She played on many theater stages and in movies and gained many awards as well as an actress. In 1984 she ended her music career after a hugh consert in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 2000 she performed the song "Për ty" (For you) in an Albanian TV show after 16 years of absence.
