Profesori grek në intervistë tek New York Times : “Ne flisnim shqip, të tjerët na bënë grekë”

Profesori i Universitetit të Athinës Nikos Dimou, në intervistë për New York Times (gazeta më e madhe në Amerikë) duke folur për Muzeun e ri të Athinës deklaroi, që grekët e sotëm flisnin shqip dhe s'kanë lidhje me grekët e lashtë.
“It’s the fault of a German,” Mr. Dimou said about Greek pride in this cause. He was referring to Johann Winckelmann, the 18th-century German art historian whose vision of an ancient Greece “populated by beautiful, tall, blond, wise people, representing perfection,” as Mr. Dimou put it, was in a sense imposed on the country to shape modern Greek identity.

“We used to speak Albanian and call ourselves Romans, but then Winckelmann, Goethe, Victor Hugo, Delacroix, they all told us, ‘No, you are Hellenes, direct descendants of Plato and Socrates,’ and that did it. If a small, poor nation has such a burden put on its shoulders, it will never recover.”

Është faji i një gjermani, thot z.Dimou për kokëfortësinë e grekëve në këtë çeshtje. Dimou fliste për Johann Winckelmann, historian gjerman i arteve të shekullit të 18, vizioni i së cilit ishte për “një Greqi të lashtë të populluar nga njerëz të bukur, të gjatë, të urtë që riprezantonin perfeksionin”, si z.Dimou tha ishte e imponuar te shteti grek, që të krijonte identitetin modern grek.
“Ne flisnim shqip dhe e quanim vetveten Bizantinë”, por atëherë Winckelmann, Goethe, Victor Hugo, Delacroix,e të tërë na thanë, “Jo, ju jeni Grekë, pasardhës direkt të Platonit e Sokratit” dhe atëherë filluan problemet. Por një komb i vogël dhe i varfër, që ka një ngarkesë të tillë mbi supet e tij, kurrë nuk do shërohet.
